Following involvement in the extensive decant operations for Barnet College, Gibberd were appointed as the lead consultants and architects to the main contractor, Vinci UK Ltd for the detailed design development of its new three storey, state-of-the-art education facility. Completed in 2010, the rebuild accommodates approximately 15,000 students in 11,000sqm of teaching space for arts and media education and training and is now one of the main campuses of Barnet and Southgate College, an institute of further and higher education comprising of three main campuses and two other learning centres in the North London Boroughs of Barnet and Enfield.
Further to classroom spaces, facilities include a 60 seat lecture theatre with fully retractable bleacher seating and a multi-purpose public space for conferences and exhibitions. The design is very environmentally conscious, and employs a number of sustainable elements including wind catchers and ground source heat pumps, as well as vertical and horizontal Brise Soleil on the south elevation, which led to the college achieving a BREEAM rating of ‘Very Good’.
The college is one of 26 in the 157 Group, a forward thinking organisation representing leading UK colleges looking to transform the economy through the delivery of high-quality technical and professional education. Acceptance to become a member of the group is a decision made by the full membership of the 157 Group. Gibberd are therefore very proud to have provided what is now the Wood Street campus of the merged institution with the facilities that have enabled the ever-increasing success of the college.
