Following a successful PFI bid by Rydon Construction in 2003, Gibberd were appointed as executive architect for the Callington Road development, together with serveral other near by mental healthcare facilities in Bristol.
The Callington Road scheme was sited on a 4.5 hectare plot. The campus was designed to accommodate seven independent buildings that would replace existing mental healthcare facilities at Barrow Hospital which had become outdated over the years.
The scheme provided a variety of psychiatric inpatient and rehabilitation facilities. Provisions for sport and community services were also incorporated into the design that Bristol and the surrounding region could benefit from. A daycare hospital was designed to provide space for 127 care beds across 16 wards. Every ward has easy access to the central facilities at Callington Road. Each of the seven units were set within secure landscaped gardens to allow users to have safe and private access to the natural environment to compliment their treatment.
Gibberd’s extensive architectural healthcare experience assisted the delivery of a project which successfully met client expectations and was delivered within the allocated timeframe and budget.
