Appointed as lead Consultant and Architects to the main contractor, VINCI UK, Gibberd provided architectural services from RIBA Work Stage 4 through to completion, including the execution of the detailed design and the on site delivery of works.
Located within the Chancery Lane conservation area on the Western side of Fetter Lane, in the City of London, the existing building comprised a mix of dilapidated commercial office space and privately owned residential dwellings. Built in 1937 and significantly altered in the 1980’s, the existing building faces the grade I St Dunstan-in-the-West Church to the South and the grade II* former Public Records Office, now King’s College London Library to the North.
Completed in 2014 the extension and refurbishment at Clifford’s Inn set out to provide four floors of high quality grade A office accommodation over lower ground to second floor, and a total of 8 new private luxury residential units, over part first and second floors. Works to the existing building included the detailed design and construction of two new fully glazed infill extensions within the courtyard to the rear, a full redesign and replacement of the ‘Fetter Lane’ façade, clad in Portland stone and Carrara marble, and an extensive reconfiguration and refurbishment of the buildings existing interior, including a bespoke reception remodelled which was extended to provide two new lifts servicing the offices above and below.
