The Orangery is an Extra Care Scheme for Amicus Horizon in Bexhill-On-Sea. Gibberd were appointed by Rydon Construction as Executive Architect for the construction stage of The Orangery Scheme.
On the site of a former primary school The Orangery comprises of two buildings which are linked by a glazed walkway and provides 58 high quality residential units for older people with flexible and independent living care needs. The residential units are a mix of 1 and 2 bedrooms and are split between affordable rent and shared ownership tenures. There are a range of communal and support facilities which are shared with the wider community and include a restaurant, communal lounge, activity rooms and a hair salon. The scheme also benefits from a comfortable guest suite which can be reserved by residents for friends and family to visit. In addition there are also six 2 bedroom cottages provided for private sale. The scheme is designed and built to Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4 with a communal heating system which allows independent control of heating for each apartment. Each apartment has a private balcony space and all residents will benefit from the communal landscaped gardens in which the scheme sits.
The site benefits from a number of mature trees to the perimeter these have been protected and retained throughout construction and give the communal gardens a mature and established feel providing natural screening from neighbouring properties. The communal landscaped gardens will offer opportunity for residents to enjoy a range of outdoor activities.
Gibberd were appointed as Interior Designers for the fit out of the communal areas at The Orangery. The development of the interior design scheme involved close working with a number of stakeholders and user groups to develop a scheme which is well suited to a range of future residents with differing needs. Careful consideration was given to wayfinding and the use of colour was of key importance in providing clear and distinct zones to the scheme.
