The Wellesley Hotel, Knightsbridge Day

Sector: Hotels and leisure
Client: Arab Investments Ltd
Project value: £16 million
Project stage: Complete

Gibberd Architects has been appointed as Architects and Lead Consultants by main contractor Brookfield, in the reconstruction of an existing office building behind a retained facade, to provide a new luxury boutique hotel in Knightsbridge. Named after the Sir Arthur Wellesley, the building, which was originally one of the station entrances to Hyde Park Corner, accommodates 38 bedrooms and a roof top penthouse with views over Hyde Park. The unique development also includes a ground floor jazz lounge, cigar terrace and restaurant with associated kitchen facilities.

Designed above the existing infrastructure of the Piccadilly Line, the project posed a number of logistical challenges, including loading restrictions to the forecourt, a single point of access to the site and sensitive neighbours including a number of high end Knightsbridge hotels.

The hotel itself was recognised as 'Highly Commended' for the Award for New Small Hotel, Construction and Design, within the UK category.
