Gibberd have been appointed by Red Construction Group Ltd to act as executive architects on Audiology House, 45 Nightingale Lane. The project is being developed by Joseph Edmund and will produce 19 beautifully appointed apartments within walking distance to all the local amenities of Clapham and Balham.
The project is split between two buildings, the existing Audiology House and a new build to the rear of the site. Audiology House was built circa 1870 and is a traditional small mansion typical of the period. In 1923 Mullard Electrical Works acquired the house and developed the land behind the house into an electrical warehouse. During the history of the site two industrial side extensions were added to the house. As part of the new development the extensions will be demolished and two new, more sympathetic wings will be added to the house.
Further demolition will occur to the rear of the site where the main warehouse is situated. A replacement new build residential development will replace this warehouse. The block will be three storeys high and include a saw-tooth roof, which maintains the industrial aesthetic of the site. Between the two blocks a new communal landscape scheme will provide the residents with a private courtyard to enjoy.
Audiology house will be carefully renovated with the new wings being constructed from a steel frame and precast facades, whilst the rear block will be constructed from a steel frame construction and clad in a combination of brick and zinc.
