Cambridge House - Birkbeck, University of London

Gibberd were appointed as executive architect for the refurbishment of Cambridge House, a 1920's former car showroom, which has a prominent presence on Euston Road, the building has been transformed into a flagship Learning centre for Birkbeck, University of London.

The refurbishment and roof extension provides 440m² of striking additional teaching space for 610 students and staff. The scheme includes a cafe and active learning space on the ground floor, with teaching classrooms at the upper floors and a large two storey Cross Laminated Timber, copper clad lecture theatre which is perched atop forming a striking rooftop 'gem-like- extension.

The building integrates PV panels to the roof top extension and achieve BREEAM rating of 'Excellent'.

Project of the Year and winner in the Learning category of New London Architecture Awards 2021 and shortlisted for an AJ Retrofit Award 2022 in the Schools and Further Education Category.
