Sector: Healthcare, Interiors, Regeneration
Client: Guy's & St Thomas' NHS Trust
As part of an existing framework agreement with Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, Gibberd Architects were invited following a competitive tender to refurbish a disused dermatology unit at St Thomas’ Hospital, to provide a new 500sqm Paediatric Ophthalmology Department. Facilities included reception area, office accommodation, consultant rooms, an electro-diagnostic room, a visual fields room, a starlight room, orthoptic bays and integrated play areas.
The brief was developed in close consultation with the user group to establish room sizes, adjacencies and equipment requirements through to selection of the furniture and art work. The interior finishes have been design around the needs of children with visual impairment to create a bright, colourful and inviting space, including feature lighting, bespoke signage and backlit, photographic art work. Play-pods have been integrated within the main waiting area to provide a dedicated play space.
